One of the most remarkable things about Hammer House composer James Bernard's output is the straight face his music always manages to keep. For even the most ludicrously off-putting titles, his scores always surpass expectations. For example, a "Love Theme" would seem mismatched to something called The Scars Of Dracula, and yet it provides a much-needed heart to the film. And the piece--which is solely for strings--is achingly beautiful. For the Ursula Andress vehicle She, Bernard presents a suite of dizzying allure, as befits "Ayesha--She Who Must Be Obeyed". After the sensual opening is a stately brass march, a regal "Processional", and rolling thunderclaps of doom for "The Cruelty Of She". Offering contrast again, is the portrait of fragility for "Christina" from Frankenstein Created Woman: the flute-led motif is almost impossibly delicate. The album's title film score, The Devil Rides Out, is as memorable a portrait of Old Nick as The Omen. Once heard, Bernard's cyclic theme stays with you like glue. Falling under this composer's spell is no curse at all. --Paul Tonks
