◎レビュー (Amazon)
Set in the Montana headlands, Arthur Penn's The Missouri Breaks (1976) was one of the decade's most anticipated releases. Jack Nicholson stars as Tom Logan, a horse thief who sets out to avenge a colleague's death, only to find his own life placed at risk by an Irish gunslinger (Marlon Brando) hired to eliminate his gang. For composer John Williams, The Missouri Breaks was a high-profile "event" picture that followed in the wake of his Oscar-winning work for Steven Spielberg's Jaws (1975). In a surprising departure from the Americana strains of his previous western outings (The Reivers, The Cowboys), Williams turned in a non-symphonic but highly melodic score for acoustic guitar, electric bass guitar, harmonica, mandolin, and electric harpsichord. The follies of Nicholson's gang are accentuated with an up-tempo spirit, while the unlikely romance between Logan and a range boss's daughter (Kathleen Lloyd) is underscored by a charming, lyrical love theme ("Jane And Logan"). Brando's threat is represented by an eerie motif for bass harmonica ("Confrontation"), though the instrument is used in a more reflective context in the haunting "Remembrances". Rykodisc's outstanding presentation of this unique, off-beat score features outstanding engineering, three bonus tracks and the original movie artwork by the legendary Robert Peak. --Kevin Mulhall
