◎レビュー (Amazon)
As Star Wars-mania gripped the world once again in 1999 Silva Screen opportunely released this well-rounded selection from the fertile career of the composer whose vibrant music has played its own special part in the Star Wars phenomenon. This extra-value double album features extracts from most of John Williams' greatest hits from the 1970s--Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Superman, Jaws and of course Star Wars--along with more recent, more sober scores like Saving Private Ryan, JFK, Amistad and Born on the Fourth of July. But the main attraction of this rewarding set lies in the inclusion of less frequently recorded items like the exhilarating opening from The Towering Inferno, the brawny "Overture" from The Cowboys, the playful finale from Hitchcock's Family Plot, the swashbuckling Hook and the edgy theme from Presumed Innocent. The earliest title, though, is The Rare Breed from 1966, Williams' first big screen western and a lively example of his developing talent. Even if they cannot match the composer's own peerless soundtrack recordings, the Prague orchestra's vigorous, crisply recorded performances, will not disappoint. --Robert Seeley
