At some point, composer Rachel Portman must have experienced deja vu working on this project when The Proclaimers' "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" was applied. Early in her career it acted as a theme song for the Johnny Depp vehicle Benny and Joon. The music she has written for both scores (and many in-between) bears similar characteristics. A tempo-influenced "bounce" feels somewhere between a circus-styled waltz and a rocking beat. It maintains a warmth throughout, and anything belonging to the romantic or comedic genres is much the better for it. Portman writes music that makes you smile (try the 45-second "A New Look" for size). Proving how much a part of the "up" mood the score is considered to be, it's sprinkled randomly between several more feel-good sourced songs: Louis Armstrong with "A Kiss to Build a Dream On", Ricky Valance wanting to "Tell Laura I Love Her" and Jackie Wilson finishing the tale with "I Get the Sweetest Feeling". If the album came in fur casing it could hardly feel fluffier. --Paul Tonks
